Athletics NZ publishes an explanation of ‘Top 16’ Policy

Over the past five years Athletics New Zealand has maintained an overriding philosophy for all major championship events of selecting only those athletes capable of achieving a Top 16 placing.

While this philosophy and the implementation of it have seen criticism from athletes, coaches and administrators across the sport, it is a philosophy which is supported by Sport NZ and the NZOC.

Athletics NZ intends to stand by its continued use of this philosophy to set selection policy and criteria for major championships. As part of this strategy they have also felt it necessary to provide a clear and concise explanation as to the basis for the formation of the philosophy and how it affects selection.
