Another successful installment of Christchurch’s International Track Meet produced a World Leading performance in the shot put as well as some great trans-tasman racing in the distance events.
Held on the immaculate grass surface at Christ’s College on the third anniversary of the devastating Christchurch earthquake the 2014 ITM was a special occasion for many.
The highlight of the meeting was Valerie Adam’s big 20.19m throw in the Women’s shot put event which puts her clearly at the top of the world 2014 performance list, and extends her international winning streak to 43 competitions. Adams will now prepare for the World Indoor Championships being held in Sopot, Poland in two weeks.
Rising star, Tom Walsh, also performed well in the shot to eclipse his meet record by 7cm with a 19.89m effort, although well short of his National Record throw of 20.61m from December.
In the 3000m races, which included the National Championships, Australian athletes Eloise Wellings and Ben Saint-Lawrence were the winners. In the Women’s race Wellings won in 9:39 while Rosa Flanagan (9:43) and Nikki Hamblin (9:44) battled to the finish for the title. Saint-Lawrence had things all his own way in the Men’s race winning by almost 20 seconds in 8:03. Second place went to Irish athlete Mark Hanrahan (8:20) with the NZ Title and 3rd place to Daniel Balchin (8:22).
