Alice Baker, an Otago University Harrier Club life member, was tragically killed by a car while cycling at home in Pleasant Point near Timaru on Sunday. As an administrator she made a significant contribution to her club who awarded her life membership in 2005 for these services. Alice was also an active athlete who was always keen to participate in any event or training adventure. She will be remembered as a friendly, kind, and giving individual.

Nick Willis continues his Tour of NZ this weekend with a visit to Newtown Park in Wellington to officially open the athletics season there. Nick has traveled the country over the past two weeks with visits to Timaru, Dunedin, Christchurch, Nelson, Hamilton and Auckland among his many stops.

With two separate races each for the Men (8km) and the Women (6km) the Pre Nats can get a bit confusing. Despite the split fields the competition is tough with several Kiwi's running well. In the White Race Edwin Henshaw (Tulsa - 24:09) placed 28th with Daniel Wallis (Colo State - 25:00) and Julian Matthews (Auburn - 25:03). In the Men's Blue race Hayden McLaren (Providence - 24:25), Dominic Channon (Providence - 24:51) were the Kiwi's. In the Women's White race Holly van Dalen (Stony Brook - 21:11) was 38th with sister Lucy van Dalen (SB - 21:23) and Haley Green (SB - 21:28) 52nd and 58th, Katie Wright (Tulsa - 22:07), Melanie Cleland (T - 22:15). In the Blue race Sarah Morgan (Providence - 22:27) finished 166th.

London to Brighton 90k - 4.10.08
Stuart Mills (7:59) formely of Hutt Valley Harriers easily won the London to Brighton Road Race, one of the Worlds longest held races dating back to 1899. Mills won in atrocious conditions with a winning margin of over 1:40. Mills was a contemporary of Gerrard Maarhuis, Paul Coles, Mark Higham, Rob McGregor etc.

Jono Wyatt (41:42) finished 4th behind Mitja Kosovelj (40:22) but did enough to comfortably win the WRMA GP Series Title. Anna Frost finished 8th in the race but did enough to also claim the WRMA Series title. Both coleected 1000euros.

Valerie Vili (19.69) continued her stellar year with a win in the World Athletic Final in Stuttgart. Once again Vili lead from her first attempt with none of her four puts bettered by the other competitors. Nick Willis (3:38) proved he can kick with the best in finishing third in a race that went through 1200m in 2:57. Beatrice Faumuina did not start.

New York Marathon - 2.11.08
Kim Smith ran with the leaders early in her debut Marathon in New York, but after being ill in the days leading into the race was forced to withdraw at 33km.John Henwood showed he is on the come back trail after posting a solid 2:21 in his first Marathon since his Commonwealth Games exclusion in 2006. Luke Walton and Brent Pulley (both 2:41) were the two next highest placed New Zealander's. To commemorate the 25th Anniversary of his NY win, Rod Dixon ran with his daughter Emma with both finishing in 3:34.

Jason Woolhouse (30:05) lived up to his favourite billing by running away with the Sir Barry Curtis 10km by 17 seconds from Australian Toby Rayner (30:22). Ben Ruthe (31:04) and Richard Olsen (31:24 continued their solid racing form for third and fourth. Alice Mason (33:36) had an easy win in the Women's race in a smart time, to finish almost two minutes ahead of Belinda Wimmer (35:33) and Kate McIlroy (35:40).

National Road Relay - 4.10.08
At the National Road Relay in Dunedin The University of Canterbury defended their Men's relay title with a decisive run coming from Kim Hogarth to establish an unassailable lead heading into the final leg. The Pakuranga Women's team also defended their 2007 title in convincing fashion despite being 2 1/2 minutes down heading into the 7th leg. The Athletics Nelson 'Umbrella club' won the Junior Men's title while Auckland City took away the Junior Women's after a tough battle with Pakuranga. Wellington Scottish won the Overall Top Club Award for the seventh time in eight years.
