not many people realise how good the japanese are in the relays. numerous medals at world/olympic level in 4x100 when other big teams have broken down -they're so clinical with their changes, and generally have a group of 45 sec runners making finals in the 4x4.

It's an interesting call from the Aussie selectors to take these guys when they are being pretty hardline on Melissa Breen who is significantly closer to the AA mark. I think it is a great decision though. Reading the quote below from the AA statement it shows that their policy actually uses the selectors to make discretionary decisions - perhaps things might change here one day too! - dc “In exercising our discretion further the Selectors have identified Dent for nomination after taking into account a number of factors including the quality and consistency of his performances during the qualifying period, his performance curve over recent years and his international record.

NZOC and Aths NZ need to explain their standards!

I guess breaking into the 2:16s doesn't count;-) I've had some communications with the selectors and tried to outline a case as to why I should be selected off my (lowly, shameful) B standard but no dice. I won't go into the detail but 16th place finishing times was also part of my argument (I even used my statistical license and ignored the 2:20 outlier!) One theory behind the 2:12 is that even though history says a 2:16 will likely get you 16th place, the athletes running those times are actually more like 2:12 guys (though they ignore that perhaps a 2:16 guy came 15th!). Part of this makes sense as conditions/courses are typically hotter/slower but it fails to recognize that the marathon can be a and anything can happen, especially with the added pressure of the biggest race of your life. It goes both ways obviously and yes you could have a bad day but what if you nailed it? If you have a good day, there'll be plenty who don't and I wouldn't bet against a 2:16 guy making the top 16. I wouldn't bet the house on it either but it's not that far out of the realms of possibilities that an athlete may actually PB at the Olympics. One thing I'd like to see happen with the OG marathon (maybe other events too) is for the IOC/IAAF to mandate that countries send as many people as they can (ie 3 IAAF A standards or 1 IAAF B standard). There's no number restrictions on the road and we're not talking huge numbers anyway, maybe going from 60-70 starters to 100 (actually, 113 if this is accurate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Athletics_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Qualification#Men.27s_Marathon). I also read a good article over the weekend suggesting a team aspect be introduced (similar to World Champs) which would add another aspect to the race and more competition for everyone running (can't remember where, maybe Rees linked to it on twitter?).

NZOC and Aths NZ need to explain their standards!

NZOC and Aths NZ need to explain their standards!

I'm all in favour of selecting people who beat the IOC A standards, be it for marathon or any other event. But in fairness to Athletics NZ, if they chose to instead on top 16 potential as a requirement for selection, then their 2.12 standard makes sense in that context. This is because, while 2.14.00 has always been enough to earn top 16 in the Games previously, I think it's fair to say the guys placing in the top 16 of those Games have always had or had demonstrated the ability to run far faster than 2.14 on a good day for fast marathon running. The Olympic Marathon is rarely (if ever?) a day conducive to running one's fastest marathon. So, in short, to run top 16 in the Olympic Marathon you've really got to be better than a 2.14 marathoner in good racing conditions. At least 2.12 ability to my mind. If any statto wants to review say top 16s from the last 3 Olympics and can find a guy in the top 16 who doesn't have a lifetime marathon best faster than 2.14, I'd be shocked. Personally, I'd do away with top 16 as a requirement for international selection. If guys can hit the IOC A standard and they're in the top 3 in their country, let 'em run. It's tough enough to make an Olympics, and inspiring for other athletes to see their countrymen or women in the Games, and so big shame the governing body is making it harder still with the top 16 demand!

Will Edwin (and van Barneveld?) run Vosseler with Huntly Half the next day?

542

Wellington Running

Wellington Running

Yeah, Dorne Cup, great race, but weeks away - so I'll return to my one-man propaganda attempt to hype the Vosseler - which is this weekend. Sadly you can never pick winners for Vosseler because you never know who will show up on the day, but my speculative guesses would be Drought and van Barneveld. What we learnt from Varsity Relays was Sarah Drought is fast and could go one better than last year's second place senior women at Vosseler - but she'll have to beat a pack of strong hill runners from Scottish that could include Mitchell, Harris, Murrihy-Topp, Ros, and Mellsop. In the masters McLean and MacKenzie respectively look to be a step above their competition from the Varsity results. And in the senior men Edwin and Julian were impressive but so was van Barneveld, looking strong running the 4th fastest lap and then the 7th fastest lap. And, in terms of the men's teams race, despite all the '2014'-talk, it turns out that WHAC does have enough runners to front after all - to the point where they could bury Evan Cooper in their C team and still win the Varsity Relay title. (And crossing a bridge at Dorne would be a travesty!)

542

Ned might be a wee bit less of a factor this year if they use the recently built bridge over the river were we would normaly cross for the 1st time. You would hope they will still make us cross the stream before and after the bridge

Interesting. It would be nice to have some comment from ANZ as to how they got to 2.12. What's with the graph in that article!? 1984! What was going on there? I though LA was hot and 'smoggy'. Was the course short? Was it the peak of marathoning as the cool sport and shameteurism having an affect on the quality of the field? Really stands out there.

NZOC and Aths NZ need to explain their standards!

NZOC and Aths NZ need to explain their standards!

I encourage you to read the article linked below written by Tim McGrath for Inside Athletics, but for the NZ context I will pull out the important point: The Athletics NZ/NZOC selection standards have been set so that the overiding objective of selected athletes will be "to have the demonstrated ability to finish within the top 16 at the 2012 London Olympic Games...." While it appears with most events the previous games results back-up the performance standards set, the marathon standard is at odds with previous results. The IAAF A and B standards are 2:15 and 2:18 for the Men, while Athletics NZ have set our standard higher at 2:12 (The same as Australia). If the results agreed, one could understand that having a tougher standard would align with the desired objective of selecting athletes who had the ability to finish in the Top 16, but they don't.  The fastest ever 16th place finisher in an Olympic Marathon was in 2008 at 2:14 - and in '96, '00 and '04 the 16th place finisher was over 2:16!! To add to this, the 16th place finisher in the 2011 World Champs was 2:15:56.    I'd love to know how ANZ and the NZOC feel the tougher standard can be justified when the results/OG performances just don't match with their overiding objective! Inside Athletics article on Australian Marathon Selections and performance standards And, for some background, a previous article from Inside Athletics in February discussing the Marathon standards

Jeez Mr Takalua...can you NOT ask any more questions like this please? Harold Nelson's two CC titles were 1946 and 1951 Both while running for Otago where he went to Otago Boys High (with Arch Jelley) and then Otago University School of PE. He shifted to Nelson in 1951. D*ck Tayler won the 1967 Jnr mile for Canturbury (John Dixon was 2nd). The 1970 Snr 1500m while running for Otago.The1973 CC while running for Otago, and the 1974 10,000m for Wellington. Rod Dixon won the1971 Snr XC for Wellington(Nelson) and the 1977 XC for Cant. He won the 1978 5000m for Cant. The 1979, 1980, 1981 5000m for Auck, and also the 1981 10,000m for Auck. He also won the English XC in 1973, beating David Bedford, and then placed 3rd in the World XC in Belgium that same year. John Dixon won the 1975 and 1978 Snr XC for Wellington (Nelson). While Phil Costley has won many NZ titles he has only Repd HBG and Cant as a senior. TAS as a Master. Toni Hodgkinson won Snr titles for two centres. 800m 1990 (2:10.9) for TASMAN and 1991 for Auck. (2:13.62) Peter Pearless won the NZ 800m title in 1983 for Auck (1:49.53) and for TASMAN in 1985 (1:47.96). These are the only two athletes that I can find who have won Senior titles exclusively for the TASMAN centre. There are a number of distance athletes who have medaled in three provinces. Lorraine Moller, Waik, Otago, Auckland Gary Palmer Waik, Otago, Auck Euan Robertson Otago, WCNI Waik Rod Dixon Cant, Wel, Auck. D*ick Tayler Cant, Otago, Wel. Jessica Ruthe NTH, Wel Wai. Sarah Biss Wel, Auck, Waik Margurite Buist WCNI, Otago, Waik Rex Wilson HBG, Waik, Nth. Phil Costley HBG, Cant, TAS. AND And then there is the athletically inane For example Robbie Johnson who first repd Otago. Then Auck, North Harbour Bays and North Shore Bays (which incorporated Northland) ...three provinces, without changing addresses. Paul Ballinger who likewise repd WCNI, Wanganui/Taranaki and Taranaki without shifting house either.

Huge thanks to all those who are Hoofing it with Harold on June 3rd at the Christchurch Marathon - some trying to run fast, some just wanting to finish, but all raising money in a good cause. I'll be doing the 10k as Harold - an 8ft tall costume that weighs almost 30lb and is like an oven inside, which has got to be worth some sponsorship from those of you who enjoy seeing me do dumb things for charity. :) If there are any corporates out there who fancy some great exposure, you’d better be quick – the t-shirts are going to print on Monday, so if you want your logo on the t-shirts come back to me with a pledge for $1000 (plus GST, but it’s tax deductible!) and a hi-res copy of your logo. Otherwise, for $500 you can have a logo and website link on our webpage. I know it is very, very early in the season but after the first major XC race in auckland today there may be a NZXC favourite already! Brent Henley absolutely dominated a pretty classy field over the 7.5km course. He moved from the start and just continued to pull away from the likes of Stephen Lett (2nd), Jono Jackson (3rd) and Alex Parlane (4th). Seemed to do it with relative ease too. Was almost exactly the same as Alex did in 2010 and we all know who won NZXC that year! So although its super early in the season im going to call it now Brent Henley to win NZ cross (not gunna bank my left nut on it though)

Excellent Idea Biltong, put us all out of our misery....I'll put up a copy of 'Flanagan's Run' as first prize. (must reread it, now that you have bought it up.) Further to Stevedays comments about Ester James walk in 1931. I am just reading about A.H.Reed the publisher (from Dunedin) who walked the length of New Zealand in 1960/1 at the age of 85. He took a short break at the halfway stage and climbed Ngauruhoe (7515 ft) At age 88 he walked 888 miles from Dunedin to Chch, across Arthur's pass, down to the Haast River, over the Haast pass and back to Dunedin through central Otago. ('The Friendly Road' by A.H. Reed)In 1965 at age 89 he walked the 1013km from Sydney to Melbourne. In 1955 at age 80 he climbed Mt Egmont(8260ft) and then decided to walk the 100 odd miles around the base of the mountain as well. Here's what he wrote about the New Zealanders he met. It would probably not be too dissimilar to what John Young experienced on his journey in 1966. "At sundown after travelling over 20 miles, I put my sleeping bag down in the Page brothers woolshed, where from the open door I had a fine view of the mountain, now rising up clearly in the moonlit sky. I was just dozing off when one of the brothers appeared carrying a torch in one hand and a tray with a cup of tea and cakes in the other. About noon on the following day I arrived at a quarry where men were working, and where a kerosene tin was hanging over a blazing fire. I asked if I might boil my billy there and was told "there's plenty of tea for all, and we'll pour some into your billy" I sat down to my lunch with these friendly quarry men. It was after sunset when I arrived at Pukeiti Lodge, where permission to put my sleeping bag down on the floor of a shed was flatly refused. I was taken into the kitchen, where Mrs Bayley placed before me a plate of scrambled eggs, and later I was shown into the board room where a mattress had been laid down for my comfort. Next day I bypassed New Plymouth, and that evening arrived at Inglewood intending to stay with friends, they were out of town so I slept on their verandha. About mid morning on the following day I was overtaken by Phyllis and her daughter who had bought out refreshments for a snack. In the neighbourhood of Midhurst a man crossed the road to ask, "Are you Mr Reed?" The speaker was Harold Marchant of Cardiff, who, on my arrival at Stratford took me to his home, where I received a warm welcome from the family and stayed the night. (Harold Marchant was one of New Zealand's biggest growers of Rhododendrons) And so ended my walk around the mountain accomplished in four days instead of the intended five. (forty plus km a day at age 80)

Syntactic ambiguity at its best, DK. How much money has been spent on finding a cure for cancer? You may well ask - how much money has been spent on finding a cure for running? Do you recall Flanagan's Run a 1982 novel written by Scottish athlete and author Tom McNab. Twenty years ago, I read the entire book with trepidation thinking it would be as boring as a 50km training run and guess what? I lapped up every chapter as if I were reading a Louis L'amour Western novel. Especially the escapades of Trace Jordan in The Burning Hills. So how about someone organises a Flanagan's Run from Cape Reinga to the Bluff? We could hold this race every four years - Olympic like - and donate the proceeds to finding a cure for running. I sure as hell need it, because it's killing me, slowly but surely.
