St Patrick’s College Silverstream is to host an International Mile race in February, featuring Olympic 1500-metre silver medalist, Nick Willis and a field of top international middle distance athletes.

The International Mile will be the feature event in a twilight track programme at the college on February 24th, beginning at 5.30pm.  The star event is scheduled for 7.15pm.

“It will be a rare and exciting opportunity to see a class field of middle distance athletes in action,” says Gerard Tully, St Patrick’s College Rector.

The International Mile athletes have set themselves the ambitious goal of running a sub four-minute mile on the school’s grass track. If successful, it will be the first time a sub four-minute mile is achieved on a school grass track anywhere in the world.

The high-profile Track Meet marks the beginning of a campaign to raise funds for a new Sports Hub at the college, says Gerard Tully. The hub is a major development project at St Patrick’s Silverstream, comprising a new gymnasium, an aquatic centre and a state-of-the-art all-weather track. The construction of the new gymnasium will begin later this year and it is planned to build the all weather track on land at the southern end of the college.

“The all-weather track will be a wonderful asset not just for the school but for the local Hutt community and the whole region,” says Gerard. “There’s a big need for a quality all-weather facility in the Hutt Valley. St Pat’s is a strong sporting college – our goal is to have first-class amenities that can benefit the wider sporting community in the region, as well as our students.”

Gerard Tully said the fundraising campaign for the all-weather track will involve a partnership between the school, the old boys’ community and the wider community.
