Willis misquoted on Comm Games events

posted by nzrun on February 9, 2010, 1:27pm
Following this interview with Universal Sports in the USA last week it has been incorrectly reported across numerous media sources in New Zealand that Nick Willis had decided to withdraw his intention to defend his 1500m title at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi later this year.

Speaking with Carl Jackson of NZRun.com Nick said he believed the confusion may have come from difficulty with his accent during the USA based interview with UniversalSports.com

Universal Sports (formerly WCSN) is providing the delayed coverage in the USA of the Reebok Boston Indoor Games, which Willis competed in over the weekend, and posted the interview  on their website on the fifth of February. The interview was conducted following the general press conference for the Boston event and covered Nick's return from injury, thoughts on his soon to be Silver Olympic medal and of course, his intentions for New Delhi.

At this time Nick still intends to defend his 1500m title at the Commonwealth Games as well as adding the 800m to his schedule.

ITM - Top Women Sprint Back to Christchurch

posted by nzrun on February 8, 2010, 8:10pm

New Zealand record holder Monique Williams will return to Christchurch for the 200m event at the International Track Meet on March 18th, the same meet where she set a New Zealand resident record for that distance in 2009.

Following Williams’ success last year, organisers have given the sprint race high billing, using it to bring the meet to an exciting conclusion.  Williams will face strong competition from Olympic heptathlete Rebecca Wardell, and Andrea Koenen of Wellington, the second fastest New Zealander so far this season. Organisers also expect to secure some high profile Australian competitors within the next few weeks.

Meet Director Craig Motley said “We were ecstatic at how successful the sprint events were last year, with records set in both the men’s 100m and women’s 200m, as it is very important to us that we have a well rounded programme of sprints, field events, and middle distance events.”

Wardell will be in for a busy night with 4 events on her card, as she builds towards the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October.

2010 World XC Trial - Review

posted by nzrun on January 29, 2010, 10:04pm
Trentham Memorial Park, Upper Hutt: The conditions were hard and dry underfoot with temperatures close to 30 degrees with a light warm breeze. Not ideal for spectators and far from comfortable for athletes. The course is relatively flat but some sections of the course are run through flood zones and equestrian paddocks which is lumpy and difficult underfoot. Generally a slow surface with fast flat sections in between.

JW: Danielle Trevis, Olivia Burne and Nicki McFadzien confortable established themselves out front in the first 2km lap and battled together until Trevis started to pull away at about 4km. Large gaps between the front three at the finish with Trevis taking the win and Burne (2nd) and McFadzien (3rd) holding their positions.

JM: Raced in conjunction with the Senior Women but the two young guys in the race pulled away on their own from the start. Simon Gannaway of UC put a decent gap on Tom Davison in the first 4km lap and held on for a comfortable win despite Tommy closing the gap slightly towards the end. Winning time in the 29 min range.

SW: Kate McIlroy dominated the race from the beginning  with a small pack of Fiona Crombie, Rachael Kingsford and Kelli Palmer sticking together for most of the first lap before they sorted themselves into their finishing order. McIlroy won comfortably although a fast finishing Kingsford did close the distance significantly in the last 2km with Crombie (3rd) and Palmer (4th) holding off a fast finishing Tina Harris (5th).

SM: The pack of contenders stayed together for the first 4km lap and included Shaun Krawitz, Kim Hogarth, Rowan Hooper, Kris Gemmel, Andrew Davidson and Stefan Smith. Hooper was the first to drop at about 5 1/2 km and then a small gap opened to Smith and Davidson at 8km. Between 9 and 10km Krawitz applied the pressure and established a solid lead heading into the final 2km. Hogarth (2nd)and Gemmel battled to the end with a 30m gap separating them throughout the last 2km. Davidson (4th) held off a fast finishing Smith (5th).

With all three XC selectors in attendance and a policy which is aimed at team selection we now await the finalised team to be announced in the next couple of days.

2010 World XC Trial - Mens Preview: RunnersTribe.com

posted by nzrun on January 29, 2010, 2:47am
For the first time in many years we may see a full senior men team line up to represent New Zealand at the World Cross Country Championships. The previous policy limited selection to the competition by either winning the New Zealand title, or bettering the standard of 29.15 on the track for 10’000. The ‘selection philosophy’ outlined by Athletics New Zealand is to “select a team” for both Junior and Senior teams, which is being carried out in several ways. Firstly, the National Champion is automatically selected for the team, while 2nd & 3rd are ‘pre-selected’, so long as they remain in “good standing” with Athletics NZ and finish in the Top 6 in the Trial at the end of the month - unless given previous dispensation. Furthermore, according to clause 4.5.2 of the selection policy the first non pre-selected athlete from the New Zealand champs to finish at the Trial will be preselected for the team so long as only currently pre-selected athletes finish ahead of them.

Nick Willis enjoys double wins in capital

posted by nzrun on January 23, 2010, 12:06am

Beijing Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis put his game face on to telling effect, picking up a double-header win at the Capital Classic athletics meeting in Wellington tonight.

Willis took out the 800m in a shade over one minute 52 seconds before turning his hand to the more unaccustomed 3000m 20min later.

In a race buffeted by blustery southerlies, Willis timed his run to perfection, moving into the lead 600m from home. He rounded early leaders Hamish Carson and New Zealand secondary schools champion Aaron Pulford and eased into the home straight five metres clear, holding off a stubborn Carson for an 8min 15.12sec win to claim the national title over the distance.

Willis said he was more than happy with the time, 29sec below his personal best. It showed he was well on track to defend his 1500m Commonwealth Games gold medal in October in New Delhi, where he also plans to contest the 800m.

Willis said today's races had been vital "to wake my system up again, to learn how to race", after nearly a year off with a hip injury.

"The purpose of doing this was to put myself in a really compromising position where a lot was on the line," he said.

"I had to have my game face on, there was no room for me to be casual about things. Now when I step on the line in these professional races in the US and Europe, hopefully that would have got all the cobwebs out of my system."

Faumuina shows her class after shaky start

posted by nzrun on January 23, 2010, 12:04am

Auckland thrower Beatrice Faumuina continues to make strides towards a fourth Commonwealth Games medal after posting her third qualifying throw of the season.

The gold medallist from the 1998 Kuala Lumpur and 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games wasted no time getting into her stride at Newtown Park in Wellington last night.

Faumuina's biggest throw of 61.11m passed the qualifying mark for October's New Delhi Commonwealth Games. The 35-year-old had not passed 60m since the national championships in March.

It was her best throw of the summer after showing strong form at Mt Smart Stadium last month.

With blustery winds and cold temperatures compared to her Auckland home, Faumuina made the best of the conditions.

"I was very pleased, after I had a bit of a shaky start," she said. "It was freezing tonight, so it's nice to come out and consolidate on what I did in December."

The world champion from the 1997 Athens championships wants more throws over the games qualifying mark of 56m.

Faumuina's series of throws at the Capital Classic following the first no throw were 59.89m, 61.11m, 60.98m and 59.89m.
