Posted: Nov 20, 2009 2:57 PM CST Wow that's pretty impressive Skillo. Can you help me out with my multi for the weekend? |

Posted: Nov 20, 2009 4:04 PM CST Having carefully analysed Skillo's prediction for titles: "My picks for the titles will be those that actually cross the line first on the day" I have worked out that his predictable predictions are correct to almost exponential proportions - in other words 99.99999 on to infinity %. Why not 100%? Well there may be disqualifications, so being first across the line doesn't necessarily mean getting the title, Skillo? |

Posted: Dec 07, 2009 5:26 PM CST Next weekend in Timaru. Is there anyone brave enough to pick some winners? As we know anything can happen at these championships. |

Posted: Dec 07, 2009 8:07 PM CST "titles will be those that actually cross the line first on the day" We all know from previous olympics and world champs that this is not entirely true. What is the NZSS drug testing policy these days? |

"So Rebbeca Greene's bday must fall a couple of days short of junior... Buggar, she's still got a bloody good chance in the senior."
Her DoB is 26 Dec 1993. So under 16 at the champs but 16 at the end of the year. I always thought age was taken as at the Champs If this has changed I can't find anything about it (the NZSSAA has everything else but not the age regs). Newbould to take SG 1500, Greene in the mix for a place. Burne, Greene and McFadzien to battle out the 3k. |

Posted: Dec 08, 2009 7:14 PM CST Im pretty sure the age is taken on the 31st of december, like athletics NZ, i was able to run junior in 5th form being born in january. But it could have been taken on the day of the champs, as i would have been junior.. im not sure |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 2:10 AM CST Just browsed through results, highlights for me were; pulford 3km solo 8.19 , ballam 800m 1.52 (guessing brad mathas tripped?), rebekah greeen 9.37 , was great to see top 3 under 9.45 too. Middle/long distance races aside its always awesome to see some special performances in the field events too espicially the boys shot put with jacko gill and tom walsh throwing heavy things for miles! |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 2:37 AM CST The wind appeared to be pretty strong at times which makes some of those MD performances even more notable!

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 2:37 AM CST Yeah impressive stuff from Mr Pulford. Ballam sounds like a beast, think he was going to handle mathas anyway as he hasnt looked too impressive this year. |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 3:28 AM CST Mathas went nuts in the 800 and gapped the field (did anyone get his 400/600 split?). With about 120 to go he hit an ice maker fridge then a plasma and was pretty much walking. At about 80 to go he stopped clasped his hamstring and after the whole field passed him and he hobbled over the line. I dunno how legit the injury was, to me it looked like he just popped big time then played the hammy card. Could be wrong though. Fantastic run by Ballam. Greene running that time at 15 years old is pretty ridiculous. Pulford was simply an animal. Full credit to Graves who tried to hang on! |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 3:49 AM CST Pullford = absolute beast .21 off the record in very strong wind (probably could have run 8.08 without it.) Mathas = should've run sub 1.50 if he'd kept goin. dont think his injury was legit, probably just hit the wall. His 400 split was 54 and 600 was 84 or so. Barret = sub 40 last 300. the race varied in pace dramatically. 60 1st lap, 65 2nd |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 3:33 PM CST I got Mathas at 26.8 between 400 and 600m. Interesting tactics - great controlled run by Ballam - think he won by nearly 3s in the end - huge margin in a championship 800m. Barrett ran very well too. Newbould and Smit both impressive basically solo in the wind though a gutsy effort by Greene to stay with Newbould after backing up from the 3000m. Great event as per usual with lots of good racing jumping and throwing - those two shot putters as someone has previously mentioned - 20m! Awesome. |

Posted: Dec 13, 2009 3:33 PM CST Fleety - I believe the record (if it's still held by Phil Starr) was also set in rain and strong winds, and essentially solo. That was the same year he competed at world junior cross with glandular fever, and got within a minute of the winner - one Haile Gebrselassie. Not taking anything away from Aaron - sounds like an incredible run. |

Posted: Dec 14, 2009 3:50 PM CST I will begin by saying that I coach Brad Mathas. In the Senior Boys 800m, when I saw Brad fading from the 600m and Glen passed him at the 150m, it looked as though he'd thrown the race. Especially when he managed to get up and actually did a half-jog to the line and then clasped his hammy. Didn't look good. When I examined the hamstring it was definitely torn, but not competely gone. Brad said it went in three stages which I verified in a video of the race. First at 220m to go, at 180m, then at 160m when he couldn't continue. We were very confident going into these championships. Brad did a solo 800m 1m 55.23s down in Wgtn 28 Nov. Three weeks out he did a 600m time trial 1m 21.0s and one week out a 600m time trial 1m 20.73s (windy). This signified a speed loss for Brad, a potential 800m time of 1m 49s. So 1m 24s as he did in the race was well within his capability. We were told of other athletes who also had similar injuries. This is taking nothing away from a fantastic race from Glen Ballam, a worthy National Champion, who we considered our main opposition. Looking forward to balancing the books in the near future. |
