I can go back to 1969. My biggest memory is watching a titanic battle between Mike Ryan (Tokoroa) V Rex Maddaford (Owairaka) on one of the longer/flatter laps. Rex was quite a way ahead of Mike but both had been told that the run on that lap was a fitness test for the upcoming Pan Pacific Games. Rex managed fastest time but Mike was a matter of a second or 2 back. A few weeks later Rex ran a 13:45 5km for 2nd in the Pan Pacific Games in Tokyo on the old cinder track and Mike ran 29:08 ? for 4th in the 10km on the same track. Both only a year before had great runs in the Olympics.
Second biggest memory was having a Ding Dong battle with Scottish for the first club to have 2 teams home (I was with Lynndale) .. Scottish just nailed us in the last lap although I felt I had lost it earlier as the Scottish guy had cut me to pieces.
However, true to form we joined the Scottish guys for many beers afterwards and quite a few friendships formed. From that day I always said if I ever lived in Wellington would run for Scottish. Last run I had from there with some of the “older” crew was in 2008.
Interestingly, that relay really started me off properly in the Sport as I was wavering as to whether I wanted to stay involved.
