AMI Round the Bays and ISC Lenco Half Marathon-Wellington

Craig Ireson 1 month ago

The offical topic for the 2012 AMI Round the Bays and ISC Lenco Half Marathon!

Come join in the buzz of Wellington’s biggest fun run/walk on 26 February 2012.

The event has a 7km fun run or walk option as well as the ISC Lenco Half Marathon run or walk. Both distance options take advantage of the beautiful inner harbour bays before converging on Kilbirnie Park for live entertainment and food.

The event is organized by Sport Wellington, a regional sports trust which promotes and supports sport and recreation in the Wellington region.

The 2012 event will once again be sanctioned by Athletics Wellington; the flat, fast course and the professional timing system mean that the event is a road runner’s dream.

I've got no idea how good Kip Kemei is, but even without him sold-out fields for the half marathon may mean the course record will be under pressure? I can't find that record on the website - the fastest time seems to be Grant McLean's 72.05 and Michelle Hopkins 82.06? Not sure who is entered but I'm pretty sure some of the people who have been talking about running would back themselves to challenge those times if the weather allows.
Craig do you have the official records for RTB and the 1/2? Has the RTB course changed at all since it was first run?
hi there, the course will eb the same this year as last; measured by Peter Maunder- can't speak for previous years sorry- ehre are the year by year records:
2009
Grant McLean 1:11:44

Anna Tyler 1:27:58
2010
GRANT MCLEAN 1:12:05

Sarah Christie 1:23:57
2011
MATT DRAVITZKI 1:12:41
Michelle Hopkins 1:22:06

I read in the DomPots that the Kenyan visitor is runnig the half. The local runners will be praying for a windy day or they will be left in his dust. Especially if he goes close to 4min (grass equivalent) at the St Pats mile on Friday night.

Hayden, hopefully Round The Bays, Runners Guide to Wellington and Athletics Wellington all take a little credit for more people being out running - the weatherman definitely shouldn't be though!! - dc
I agree, the support of Rees, Hayden, and Todd Stevens in helping organise this event has been invaluable.

That's great news. Well done Craig and team at RTB! I've got to say there seems to be a lot more people out running in the city this summer. Very cool.

Hi Craig, is there any prize money for the half marathon. Thanks.
Hi there, no there is no prize money for any division, it has somethinG that has been discussed but our policy is currently not to offer money. We do offer a trip to Australia and free entry into the Sun Herald City to Surf run for Male and Female HM winners, plus ISC product. thanks!

What is the limiting factor on the numbers?? It would seem as though the start area, course and finish area could handle thousands more. Just curious - dc
HI Rees,

Good question-Last year was the biggest field in this events history- we got 11,000+ people at the start, god only knows how many bandit runners, (conservative estimate is 500+) and probably another 300-500 or so supporters at either end. Based on this growth we have set our own resource levels to cater for 12,000 people- this includes: toilets, water, race packs and bibs, etc. If we got to 12,000 then we would have effectively increased the event by almost 10% in a year- an astonishing achievement. We could have catered for more but then the risk would have been to have not met targets- too great a risk when we are already operating a tight budget- so there is some fiscal conservatism involved. Just as important is the safety and comfort of participants. I am not sure that the event could handle thousands more, and incidentally neither are Wgtn City Council, our primary stakeholder. I'd rather not push it to the limit this year for the sake of a few more hundred entries, rather close it and review infrastructure for 2013, and plan for a quantum leap to 12,000 plus participants, safe in the knowledge that our planning is sound and that public demand for the event would mean we have not wasted funds planning for a 12,000 who never come.

There are a few other reasons which I'd be happy to share, for example residents pressure on the lenght of the road closures.
I hope this answers the question, either in part or in full.

Hi there, letting you know that we have passed 8,000 participants and are expecting now to start picking up 300-400 a day, so if you are thinking of entering please do so soon to avoid disapointment, as we have to cap at the 12,000 mark- thanks

We are working with Athletics Wellington and ISC Lenco to provide pace runners for the ISC Lenco Half Marathon- they will be running at the following times:
1hr 25, 1hr 30, 1hr 40, 1hr 45, 1hr 50 & 2 hrs

They will also be decked out in the brand new ISC Compression wear.
cheers

Hi Rees, good question- there is an award for the winning team in the 7km fun run only. This is calculated on the average time of the five fastest finishers in that team. The top five win a prize pack and the team wins a (much coveted) trophy. Les Mills extreme are reigning champs and have won it a few times over the years

Craig, I have a query about Teams for the Round The Bays events.

Are there awards for the winning Teams and how is this calculated?
Cheers - dc
